In November 1970 there was a wave of apparent arsons predominately in the fourth ward. The first was a vacant building at 76 Humphrey Street. A house was set on fire on November 4th. A church was burned on W. Englewood Avenue and William Street. The same night a fire was called in at 40 William Street. 85 William Street, a residential building also caught fire. Trash was set on fire at 104 William Street and at 25 W. Englewood Avenue. A bedspread was burning on November 21st at 27 W. Englewood Avenue. On the 22nd, an abandoned house on 81 Humphrey Street was set ablaze and late that night another fire occurred at 84 W. Englewood Avenue. A fire bomb was set off when it was thrown through an apartment building window at 27 Englewood Avenue. On November 23rd Ebenezer Baptist Church was burned as was a cellar at 68 W. Englewood Avenue. On November 26th a residential building on William Street was destroyed as was another house on Third Street. On November 28th an upholstery shop was destroyed on Englewood Avenue and on November 29th apartments were burned on Englewood Avenue.
On July 21, 1967, in Englewood's fourth ward, residents rioted. Residents claimed that the other people of Englewood unfairly treated them and that the police were invasive. The unrest lasted for five days.
On March 1, 1982, Englewood teachers began a 17-day strike. They were protesting wages and benefits. The strike ended in a new three-year contract between teachers and the school district.
On July 6th, 1951 at 11:30 P.M. a fire broke out in Englewood Hospital. It burned the men's dormitory in Pierce Hall. Richard Barcello, an employee of the hospital, was arrested and pleaded guilty to arson and three counts of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison.
On January 31st, 1959 Edward Post fired shots at authorities hitting two Englewood police officers. Joseph B. Lynch and his girlfriend Sieglinde Klapprott were also arrested for their involvement.
On February 22nd, 1887, Reverand Charles W. Ward tried to kill his wife, child, and himself. Ward shot his wife, Orpah Van Schaick, in the Jaw before turning and shooting at his child, Bessie. His wife and daughter fled and he shot himself in the head. None of the wounds were fatal.
Wilt Chamberlain came back from retirement and organized an All-Star team. On April 8th, 1960, Sherman White's Jersey Titans played against Wilt Chamberlain's All-Star team at Dwight Morrow. Chamberlain's All-Star team won the game 119 to 101.
